A former Malaysian restaurant in York has been sold to a chef who made his name as a culinary star on Indian TV.

Jaswant Mehra, a celebrity chef in India who has featured in more than 300 episodes on local television cookery shows, has taken over the property that previously opened as Quinii’s and opened a new venue called ‘29 States – The Indian Kitchen’.

While working in the UK, Mehra has been a head chef at Aagrah and was chef de partie at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Leeds. He has also taken part in cookery demonstrations, appearing with UK celebrity chefs James Martin and Kenny Atkinson.

Oliver Brown of Christie + Co’s Leeds office, which brokered the deal, said: “This sale shows the demand for businesses in the York region and the ongoing rejuvenation and growth of York city centre.”

Brown said that while the city centres of Leeds and Sheffield are facing increased demand from local and regional chains, North Yorkshire spa towns were attracting independent buyers and those wishing to expand to multiple sites.

29 states – The Indian Kitchen describes itself as a contemporary restaurant offering a distinctive dining experience to satisfy all aspects of Indian cuisine.
